Connect Claude or ChatGPT
Connect Claude or ChatGPT
Connect Claude or ChatGPT to read your saved trips, routes, and favorite places. You can then ask the assistant to prepare a trip document with day maps. The assistant creates the document using its own document tools; WaypointGuru supplies saved data and branded map images.
Before you start
You need a WaypointGuru account, some saved data, and an assistant account that allows custom remote MCP connections. In a managed workspace, an administrator may need to enable or add the connection. Document creation also requires suitable document and image tools in that assistant.
Use this MCP server URL:
https://waypoint.guru/mcp
Choose OAuth authentication with automatic registration (also called dynamic client registration or DCR). WaypointGuru does not require an API key, personal access token, client secret, or custom authorization header. Use automatic registration rather than Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD).
Set up Claude on the web
- Open Customize > Connectors, then + Add > Add custom connector. For a managed workspace, its owner may first need to add a web connector in Organization settings > Connectors.
- Name it WaypointGuru and enter
https://waypoint.guru/mcpas the MCP server URL. - Continue through authentication setup. Choose Sign in now and Register automatically for the OAuth client. Use automatic registration instead of Claude's published identity.
- Finish adding the connector and choose Connect if prompted. Complete the WaypointGuru sign-in and permission steps below.
- In a conversation, open + > Connectors and enable WaypointGuru.
Menu labels and eligibility can change. See Claude's custom connector instructions if your account shows a different layout.
Set up ChatGPT on the web
ChatGPT currently documents two setup layouts. Use the one available in your account.
For the Plugins layout:
- Open Plugins, select + > Add custom MCP server, and name it WaypointGuru.
- Enter
https://waypoint.guru/mcpunder Connection. Choose OAuth, configure DCR, and leave static client credentials empty. - Review the warning, choose Create as a plugin, and install the resulting plugin. Complete WaypointGuru sign-in and consent when prompted.
- In a chat, type @ and select WaypointGuru when asking it to read your data.
See OpenAI's custom MCP server instructions.
For the Apps / developer mode layout, enable Settings > Apps > Advanced settings > Developer mode, if permitted. Create an app using the same URL and OAuth/DCR settings, scan its tools, complete sign-in, and finish creation. Select the app in your chat when requesting data; select it again for follow-up requests if needed. Workspace administrators control access to these settings. See OpenAI's developer mode instructions.
Choose permissions
Sign in to WaypointGuru in the browser window opened by the assistant. Check the displayed account and assistant before approving. You may need to sign in even if you are already signed in to the mobile app.
The consent screen offers these read categories:
| Category | What the assistant can read |
|---|---|
| Trips | Saved trip details and their contained day routes, including the day data needed for maps. It does not grant access to unrelated standalone routes or your full favorites collection. |
| Routes | Saved routes available to your account, including discovery by name, full route data, and maps. |
| Favorites | Your favorite places, including tag searches, proximity searches, and full details. |
For a trip document, start with Trips alone. Add the other categories only when you want the assistant to use them. Uncheck unwanted categories and choose Approve selected, or approve all requested categories. Choose Cancel to cancel.
Permission covers each approved category, including items saved later and shared items your account can normally access. It is not limited to one trip or one conversation. Existing sharing, privacy, and subscription restrictions still apply. Supplying a link does not bypass them.
Access is read-only: the assistant cannot edit, delete, or publish WaypointGuru data. Read access nevertheless sends data to the assistant provider, whose own storage and privacy settings apply. Access renews automatically while the connection remains valid; normal use should not require repeated approval. After a long period without use, you may need to reconnect.
Ask for a trip document
Try this with WaypointGuru enabled in your conversation:
Use WaypointGuru to find my saved trip called “Coastal holiday”. Create a document with the trip details and a section for every day. Include a WaypointGuru map for each available day and write a stop legend from the saved waypoint details. Identify rest days and unavailable routes. Keep saved statistics separate from recalculated statistics, and tell me if any data or images could not be retrieved.
You can also supply a full saved-trip or saved-route link that your account can access. Shortened links containing an exported route and unsaved routes are not supported.
Ask the assistant to finish retrieving all pages and snapshot chunks before claiming a document is complete. Trips and routes are captured from saved data into a snapshot that lasts up to 24 hours. Later edits do not change that capture, and unsaved edits are excluded. To include newly saved changes or recover an expired capture, ask for a fresh snapshot and fresh maps.
Maps default to WebP, full size, standard style, and day colors. JPEG and PNG are also supported, as are preview size, satellite style, and night colors. Ask for PNG if the document tool cannot embed WebP. Keep WaypointGuru branding and map-provider attribution visible. The assistant writes the surrounding text and stop legend.
WaypointGuru automatically calculates driving distances and durations for captured routes and trip days, including imported routes without saved estimates. Matched Google estimates are used where available, with Valhalla estimates identified as fallbacks. Driving durations exclude time at stops. Saved estimates remain separate. Route and day details include a simplified route outline and major road names where routing provides them. The assistant can request detailed geometry for a leg or a distance range when it needs to inspect a particular section.
Maps normally arrive as MCP images and protected resource references. For a document tool that needs an image URL, ask the assistant to request delivery: "url". For Google Docs, also request format: "png" or "jpeg"; WebP remains the default when no format is specified.
Download links work for 15 minutes, or until the saved snapshot expires if sooner. Anyone holding the link can fetch that image while the assistant's connection and your access remain valid. Treat the link as private. Disconnecting the assistant or losing resource access blocks further downloads, but cannot remove copies already inserted into a document. If a link expires before insertion, ask the assistant for a new one. If embedding still fails, ask it to report the missing maps instead of claiming success.
Find points of interest
With Premium or Admin access, your assistant can discover supported POI types and search for fuel, toilets, coffee, accommodation, landmarks and other places. Search a map area or a captured route segment up to 500 km long. Trip-day searches use your Trips permission; standalone routes use Routes permission. Public map-area searches are available through any active connection. Saved favorites remain a separate category.
Results are suggestions, not a complete inventory. An empty result does not establish that there is no fuel or other service. Fuel grades, opening hours and availability need separate confirmation. Distances from the route are approximate straight-line distances, not driving detours.
Premium allows 100 POI searches per rolling 24 hours; Admin allows 500. All connections share the account allowance, with at most 10 admitted searches per minute. Repeated searches and provider attempts that fail still count. These limits are separate from map rendering. Follow the returned retry time if a limit is reached.
Disconnect or change access
- In the WaypointGuru web app, open WaypointGuru Settings > User account > Connected apps.
- Review the assistant name, approved categories, and last-use information.
- Choose Disconnect for one connection, or Disconnect all to revoke every assistant connection for that account.
In mobile versions that include the browser handoff, Connected apps in the account menu opens these settings in a browser. Sign in there if asked.
Disconnecting stops subsequent data reads, map retrieval, and automatic renewal, including requests using credentials that have not expired yet. It cannot recall text, images, or documents already downloaded by the assistant. Manage that content separately with the provider.
To change approved categories, disconnect the old connection and reconnect with fresh consent. You can also remove the connector, app, or plugin in Claude or ChatGPT. Turning it off for one conversation does not revoke its WaypointGuru permission; use WaypointGuru's disconnect controls to revoke access.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| No option to add a connection | Check account eligibility and workspace administrator permissions using the provider instructions above. |
| Connection setup or registration fails | Check the server URL is https://waypoint.guru/mcp. Select OAuth with automatic registration/DCR. Do not choose CIMD or Claude's published identity. |
| Login finishes but consent does not appear | Return to the pending connection window. Use its retry control for a temporary error. If the request has expired or was canceled, start a new connection from the assistant. |
| The wrong account appears | Cancel consent. Sign in to the intended WaypointGuru account in that browser and start again. |
| A tool is missing or permission is denied | Check the categories in Connected apps and the assistant's enabled tools. Reconnect with the required category if needed. Trips alone deliberately excludes unrelated routes and full favorites access. |
| A trip, route, or shared link is unavailable | Save changes first and check that the same account can open the item in WaypointGuru. Check sharing and subscription access. Private, deleted, and inaccessible items may all appear unavailable. |
| Results seem incomplete | Ask the assistant to continue pagination and read all snapshot chunks. An empty search page can still have more pages. |
| A snapshot has expired | Request a fresh capture. Old captures expire after 24 hours and also become unusable when access is revoked. |
| A map is pending or temporarily fails | Follow the returned retry delay and reuse the same capture. Avoid repeatedly starting new captures. |
| A map hits a quota or size limit | Wait for the reported quota retry time. Reconnecting does not reset quota. A size-limit result cannot be fixed by repeatedly retrying the same capture; report it or use a smaller saved route. |
| A map cannot be embedded | For document tools requiring a URL, request delivery: "url"; for Google Docs, choose PNG or JPEG. Request a fresh link if its 15-minute lifetime has passed. Treat download links as private and report missing maps if embedding still fails. |
| The assistant keeps asking to sign in | Reconnect after checking Connected apps. Renewal can fail after disconnection or extended inactivity. Repeated prompts during an active connection should be reported. |
